Yellow green fields
Will carry you to me
A city full of vivacity & vigour
Filled with history are the stories of my streets
And magnificently shines my city’s glory
Through bustling roads & colourful bazaars
Come live a cultural extravaganza!
In the colourful state of Punjab, if there is one city that stands out for its spirit and splendour, it has to be Amritsar. Buzzing bazaars, a majestic history and the delicious smell of scrumptious, mouth-watering food - this city has a charm that is true to its culture, history and appetite. I once met a lady on the train to Amritsar, who belonged to the city and I happened to ask her, ‘what’s special about this city?’ - her answer left me smiling. She said, ‘half the population in Amritsar loves to cook, and the other half loves to eat’. As a foodie, I couldn’t wait to explore these hidden culinary delights. But before all that food, I’d recommend a few other things:
Take A Walk Down History – Sitting on the steps, seeing the change of guards with the backdrop of the setting sun at the Wagah Border is sure to evoke a sense of patriotism. The spirit of the love for your country, the intensity and conviction from both the nations, the hooting and screaming of praises - it’s an experience one shouldn’t miss out on. And then a walk through the premises of Jallianwala Bagh will surely remind you of the stories you read in History class. The experience at these two places is so alive and real, yet so calm and heart wrenching.
A Trip to Tranquility – One of the most magnificent places in Amritsar has to be the Golden Temple. Mark my words and go there twice, once in the morning to experience the buzz and its beautiful splendour and once at night for the view of this golden beauty against the midnight blue sky. It is sure to bring a sense of peace and love in you. Go there and experience it, as anything I say won’t do it justice.
Colours of Punjab – Ladies, watch up and listen. This city has some really pretty street shopping! Walk around the shops near the Golden Temple for some beautiful juttis, traditional Punjabi chappals, and gorgeous phulkari duppattas. Think Anushka Sharma from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Pretty pastels or bright and lively hues - take your pick and bring back some colour before you leave. A little bit of bargaining can get you a good price.
Go With An Appetite – This city is all for its feasting; from Amritsari kulchas to mouth-watering kebabs, and delicious kulfis to finger-licking jalebis - you can spend breakfast to dinner relishing delicacy after delicacy, one better than the other. There are so many specials that it’s hard to name just one. In the end you’ll be spoilt for choice, unable to decide your favourite. But if you are looking for a few recommendations, do try Kesar da dhaba, Gurudas Ram Jalebiwala and Beera Chicken.
Drive through the mustard fields or take a train. You can fly in to the city as well. But do come and bask in the love and grandeur of Amritsar. And, if you are looking for a rustic and culturally rich stay, then pick a room at Punjabiyat - for a quintessential Punjabi experience
