There is something so poetic about exploring the backwaters of Kerala - stretches of lakes, canals and lagoons dotted with beautiful houseboats and lush palm trees. 1) Coconut Lagoon, Kumarakom, Kerala

Similar to Coconut Lagoon, you need to take a short boat ride to reach the property. Kondai is set amidst tall palm and coconut trees - the views here will leave you truly spellbind. 'Oottusala' is the dining area that opens up to the surrounding landscape on three sides and serves traditional cuisines with few varieties from other parts of India as well. Special candle light dinner can also be arranged beside the canal on prior request.

3) Spice Coast Cruises, Kumarakom, Kerala

Spice Coast has both 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom houseboats made up of natural materials, powered with solar energy and vegetable oils to reduce their impact on the lake. The crew of these houseboats are fisherman who not only navigate the waterways but prepare meals for their guests as well. Your meals here will include a lot of fresh flavours with strong spices. Fish is among the mains in their menu and the fresh catch from the lake is truly a delight!

4) Kumarakom Lake Resort, Kottayam, Kerala

This is one of the finest luxury heritage retreat nestles on the bank of Vembanad. It is spread across 25 acres of lush greens with an idyllic view. 16th century traditional farmhouses are translocated from their original locations and are carefully reassembled to create this retreat. They have traditionally styled, open-roofed bathrooms set in their courtyards.      

5) Poovar Island Resort, Trivandrum, Kerala

Between the Arabian Sea and the mountains of the Western Ghats and opening out to a dream beach this place is truly paradise.
