Whoever said travelling came without incidents hasn’t been adventurous enough. While it is not a man’s world alone anymore when it comes to travel, a little more awareness as a solo woman traveller, goes a long way in avoiding slip-ups. And this is why a few tips are certainly grist to the mill.

  1. Confidence goes a long way

You don't have to be aggressive, but being assertive and attentive most definitely helps. Not all your trips will be smooth; some can be challenging and exhausting. What will see you through is that unshakeable belief in yourself and patience without being fearful of what lies ahead on your journey.

  1. Make friends

You don’t have to be thick as thieves but making friends at your hostel or hotel with the staff and other travellers will definitely help you know the place a lot better. You will be surprised to know how a friendly conversation can help you know about pockets that are unsafe in a place or scams that you ought to be aware of before you step out for your very first stroll. Added to this, it is definitely a lot of fun meeting like-minded individuals from all parts of the world.

  1. Not every night will be accompanied by a knight in shining armour

This one has been told to us repeatedly ever since we turned 18. Sure you’d like to experience the night life of a new place, but make sure you have the right company and if not, then perhaps it's better to get to your hotel/hostel at the right time to avoid any unpleasant experiences.

  1. Keep people in the know

Always let at least one or two close friends or family members know your whereabouts. In case of an emergency, they know how to reach you quickest.

  1. Trust your instincts

It’s not for nothing that they say that a woman’s instincts don’t lie. If you do not feel comfortable in a certain situation or with a certain set of people, walk away. You might come across as rude, but it is better than finding yourself in a situation that you can’t get out of singlehandedly.

  1. Be prepared for lessons all the way

Solo travel is all about making your own mistakes and learning as you go along. The best part about solo travel is that you’re your own teacher and student. The good part is that nothing teaches you perspective like solo travel. What’s even better is that you can never be prepared enough for them. And irrespective of what you might experience ahead in your life, these will always remain the most crucial lessons of your life.

  1. Most importantly- Accept this time with open arms

You have already taken the boldest step of your life by choosing to travel alone. Now, don’t just let it fly by the night; savour each moment. This time alone is just as important as landing that perfect job, getting married, having children, settling down.
