5) Ganga Kinare, Rishikesh, Uttarakhand
This heritage cottage is one of the older surviving residences of Shimla. It is also considered to be extraordinary in terms of architecture and decor. Its design is an adaptation from an English architectural book by R.A. Briggs (still present in the house), constructed with the traditional local “Dhajji” methodology. Opened to guests in 2011 to enable the property to pay for its upkeep and maintenance, the estate is thus an attempt at conservation and not a business venture. The house continues to be “in its original state”. It is in essence a family home that welcomes like-minded travellers.
